Shellac is a new nail product that is half gel and half nail polish. It is applied like a nail polish since it is as light and tough as a nail polish, but is cured in a way that makes it more durable and flexible. Shellac also produces very shiny and glossy nails only associated with gel nails. Shellac protects natural nails without harming the nail bed, serves like a plastic cover on the nails, and can last at least two weeks. It is not advisable to use shellac on exceedingly damaged nail beds, peeling or cracked nails. It is not also used to lengthen the nails.

Shellac is being advertised as the supreme long-lasting manicure. It brings together the hard-wearing finish of gel nails and the effortlessness of a paint-on nail polish. Applying shellac is also quite simple, and it is how it is done:

• Prepare the nails by removing existing nail polish with acetone, buff the nails and gently push and clean the cuticle and nail base
• Apply a clear base coat and dry it under a UV lamp for at least 20 seconds
• Apply the chosen shellac color in two coats, each coating cured for at least 1 minute under the UV lamp.
• Finally, apply a glossy top coat and cure it for around 20 second, then voila! You have great looking nails.

Shellac is best applied by a trained manicurist to get the best results but shellac can be removed at home by soaking the nails in pure acetone pretty much like removing gel nails. It only takes around 10 minutes to do it. If there is some concern with regards the use of a UV lamp such as drying of the skin on the hands, sunscreen can be used to protect the skin. But using it every 2 or 3 weeks is negligible and won’t really be a cause of concern.
